The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a national-level examination conducted in India to assess the understanding of various engineering and science subjects. It is jointly organized by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) (Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, and Roorkee) on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB), Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India.
Purpose of GATE
- Admission to Master’s programs (M.E./M.Tech./M.S./Ph.D.) in IITs, NITs, IIITs, and other prestigious institutions.
- Recruitment in Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) such as ONGC, NTPC, BHEL, IOCL, and more.
- Opportunities for higher studies and scholarships in India and abroad.
Eligibility Criteria
- Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Science/Architecture or be in their final year.
- Certain Science and Humanities disciplines are also eligible.
- There is no age limit for appearing in the GATE exam.

- Mode: Computer-Based Test (CBT)
- Duration: 3 Hours
- Total Marks: 100
- Number of Questions: 65 (MCQs, MSQs, and NATs)
- Sections: General Aptitude (GA) + Subject-Specific Paper
GATE Score Validity
- The GATE score remains valid for three years from the date of result declaration.
